Chapter Four

“There’s no point fighting back, Key. You do not stand a chance. All you need to do is surrender and come in for investigation. If I find you clean, I let you go,” Captain Aching’s voice resounds again.

“We both know it’s never that simple with the Empire League, Colonel.”

“Have it your way, then,” she says conclusively.

“We truly don’t stand a chance,” Ultio says as he swerves the ship to avoid an incoming hit. “This ship is too big. We’ll be down in no time.”

A missile hits the side of the ship, sending us all rocking to one side. Warning alarms beep around the ship all at once. I have to agree with Ultio—it pays to know when to give up.

“Connect to Colonel Aching,” I say.

“Yes, Key. Have you made up your mind?”

“Yes. Call your warships back. You’re not in a battle with a crime syndicate.”

“I believe in overestimating my targets,” she says sternly.

The ship takes another hit, and I am almost knocked off my feet.

“Tell them to cease fire. We will surrender,” I say, almost fuming.

“Great decision, Key. Now, those ships will escort you to your dock, and me. I look forward to seeing you.”

My hands fall to my sides in dejection. I have failed my team.

“I’m sorry, guys,” I announce to everyone on the ship.

“Sorry for what? We all agreed to come here—and Telos fleet or not, Kovacs has always been a dangerous place to think of venturing to,” Wawa says with a shrug. “We’re seasoned bounty hunters, Key—at least most of us are, and I bet it’s not the first time that we would be having to break out of imprisonment.”

I turn to Dawn to see how she is taking the situation, but her straight face does not give anything away.

“It certainly isn’t my first time,” Gwen says enthusiastically. Whatever it is that her first escape experience included, it must have been fun.

“We’re getting close to the docking site,” Ultio announces.

With Genesis gone, and the colonel pulling us in, my mind is in a messed-up state.

A call comes through again, and I connect in annoyance.

“We already had an agreement, Colonel. I’m docking my ship right now,” I snap, but Colonel Aching’s strict voice does not come through this time.

“Hello, Key.”

“Miller,” I say with a deep sigh.

“I see you’re in a little fix,” she says.

“It would appear so. Colonel Aching would not talk until we dock. We’re cornered.”

“We?” Miller asks.

“Yes. I’m here with my team.”

“You don’t have to dock. You may leave. I’ll take care of Aching. I still owe you one from the last time; take this as repayment.”

“Are you sure, though? This is likely to get you in a lot of trouble.”

“And what could anyone possibly do to me?” she chuckles lightly. “I’m Colonel Miller, and I’m giving you clearance to leave the dock, this moment. I’ll be standing in for you so you might want to do that quickly before I change my mind.”

“Thank you, Miller. Okay, Ultio, you heard her. Let’s get out of here.
